Y1- Jeffers Class

Welcome to Jeffers Class!

Meet the Teacher Presentation - click here. Our class timetable is here.

Welcome to Jeffers Class in Year 1! I am Mrs. Oakley, your Year 1 teacher. Our class is named after Oliver Jeffers, a renowned author of many children's books. This year marks an exciting transition for your children as they move into Key Stage 1, where they will have lots of opportunities, and the chance to develop their independence. I am thrilled to get to know and teach your children.

Autumn Term Focus: "Home Sweet Home"

This term, we will engage ourselves in the theme "Home Sweet Home." Our exploration will include learning about our local area and the vibrant town of Battersea, as well as exploring our personal histories. We will also enhance our geographical skills by creating maps of our school. Our '3 Ps' for this topic are:

PERSON: Me

PLACE: John Burns Primary School

POINT: 1858

Subjects

English: Our journey begins with the book entitled Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. We will create fiction and non-fiction stories, master the art of writing postcards, and use our understanding of phonics to support our writing. Emphasis will be placed on using capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces correctly.

Maths: Throughout the year, we will strengthen our skills in addition and subtraction, and venture into multiplication and division. We will also learn to tell the time, understand halving and quartering, and identify common 2-D and 3-D shapes.

Science: This term, we will conduct investigations and learn about animals, including humans. Children will learn to identify and categorise various animals using precise scientific language. Additionally, we will study parts of the body and our senses.

Homework

Homework will be set on Fridays. It will include a weekly maths task that corresponds to the week’s lessons and weekly spellings. Your child will receive a reading book, along with a decodable reading practice book. We ask that children read at home for at least ten minutes every day, and return their reading record to school completed and signed.

School Uniform and PE Kit

Gymnastics and progressive sport take place on Monday and Friday. Please ensure that all articles of school uniform, including the PE kit, are clearly marked with your child’s name, to facilitate the return of any misplaced items. We encourage you to help your child develop the skill of dressing independently at home, as this will assist them when changing at school.

About Me

This is my second year at John Burns Primary School, and I am delighted to be teaching Year 1 once again. As a local resident with two children, I truly value the strong sense of community here. Before teaching, I worked in law and finance.

I have a passion for the arts. I enjoy painting and exploring various artistic techniques, as well as writing poetry that captures the beauty of everyday moments. Cycling is one of my favourite activities, offering both a sense of adventure and a way to stay active. I also love immersing myself in a good book, finding joy in stories that inspire and entertain.

Being part of such a vibrant and community-committed school is incredibly fulfilling, and I am excited to contribute to the growth and development of the children. I look forward to another wonderful year of learning and creativity.

Communication

If you need to discuss anything regarding your child, please feel free to contact me through the school office or see me at the end of the school day.
