Y1- Jeffers Class

Welcome to Jeffers Class!

Meet the Teacher Presentation - click here. Our class timetable is here.

Welcome to Jeffers Class in Year 1!   I am Mrs. Oakley, your Year 1 teacher. Our class is named after Oliver Jeffers, a renowned author of many children's books. This year marks an exciting transition for your children as they move into Key Stage 1, where they will have lots of opportunities, and the chance to develop their independence. I am thrilled to get to know and teach your children.

Spring Term Focus: "To The Ends Of The Earth"

This term, our focus is the theme "To the Ends of the Earth," where we will explore the journeys of various explorers, from Christopher Columbus' voyages to Amelia Earhart's flights, and even Neil Armstrong's historic journey into space.

Our '3 Ps' for this topic are:

  • PERSON: Matthew Henson
  • PLACE: The Bahamas
  • POINT: 2012

Subject:

English: we are reading The Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. Our focus will be on structuring sentences and using coordinating conjunctions to extend them. We will also be retelling the story, paying close attention to the beginning, middle, and end.

Maths: Throughout the year, we will strengthen our skills in addition and subtraction, and venture into multiplication and division. We will continue to count in tens and ones, compare two-digit numbers, and learn about the values of money.

Science: In Science, we are identifying everyday materials and their properties. We will be exploring both inside and outside the school to discover what different objects are made from, considering the materials and their uses. Additionally, we will study parts of the body and our senses.

Homework

Homework will be set on Fridays. It will include a weekly maths task that corresponds to the week’s lessons and weekly spellings. Your child will receive a reading book, and we ask that they read for at least ten minutes every day, with the reading record completed and signed.

School Uniform and PE Kit

Our PE days will take place on Wednesday for fencing, Thursday for tennis and games on Friday. Please ensure that all articles of school uniform, including the PE kit, are clearly marked with your child’s name, to facilitate the return of any misplaced items. We encourage you to help your child develop the skill of dressing independently at home, as this will assist them when changing at school.

About Me

This is my second year at John Burns Primary School, and I am delighted to be teaching Year 1 once again. As a local resident with two children, I truly value the strong sense of community here. Before teaching worked in of law and finance.

I have a passion for the arts. I enjoy painting and exploring various artistic techniques, as well as writing poetry that captures the beauty of everyday moments. Cycling is one of my favourite activities, offering both a sense of adventure and a way to stay active. I also love immersing myself in a good book, finding joy in stories that inspire and entertain.

Being part of such a vibrant and community-committed school is incredibly fulfilling, and I am excited to contribute to the growth and development of our children. I look forward to another wonderful year of learning and creativity.

Communication

If you need to discuss anything regarding your child, please feel free to contact me through the school office or see me at the end of the school day.

With very best wishes,

Mrs. Oakley
